Cast-Not-Set Engagement Rings: The Technique Behind My Sculptural Stone Settings

What are cast-in-place engagement rings?

Some of my engagement rings are created using what I refer to as cast-not-set techniques.

Rather than designing a finished setting and placing the gemstone into it afterward, the ring develops around the stone during creation.

This creates a very different relationship between gemstone, metal, and structure — where the setting becomes fully integrated into the design itself.

Why I work this way?

I am drawn to cast-not-set techniques because they allow for a level of detail, structure, and integration that is difficult to achieve through more conventional stone setting methods.

The process requires an extremely precise understanding of proportion, material behaviour, and how each element interacts throughout creation.

Even the smallest adjustments influence the final result.

Because of this, every ring develops its own subtle distinctions while still remaining deeply intentional in its construction.

Sculptural talon claw settings

Many of my rings feature larger talon claw settings designed to feel structural rather than decorative.

The claws become part of the architecture of the ring itself — framing the gemstone, creating tension, and contributing to the overall identity of the piece rather than disappearing into it.

They are intentionally visible and carefully integrated into the design from the very beginning.

An intricate approach to fine jewelry

What I value most about cast-not-set jewelry is the balance between precision and material interaction.

The technique requires careful consideration throughout every stage of the process, allowing the final piece to feel highly integrated rather than assembled in separate parts.

That complexity is part of what gives each ring its individual presence.

Handmade fine jewelry in Gothenburg, Sweden

I create sculptural engagement rings and fine jewelry from my studio in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Some designs are created using cast-in-place techniques, while others are traditionally stone set depending on the intention of the piece.

All jewelry is:

  • handmade in Sweden
  • made in recycled 18K gold
  • set with ethically sourced, conflict-free gemstones

This includes diamonds, champagne diamonds, sapphires, salt and pepper diamonds, rubies just as well as any gemstone you prefer to use.
