Each piece of Philippa Davin Jewelry is handmade in my studio in Sweden using precious metals and carefully selected gemstones. Fine jewelry is made to be worn and enjoyed, but everyday use can gradually affect its finish, shape and settings. A little care helps preserve its beauty.
WEARING YOUR JEWELRY
Remove your jewelry before activities where it may be knocked, pulled, bent or exposed to chemicals. This includes sports, exercise, gardening, cleaning, manual work and stable or yard work. Rings are especially exposed to impact during hands-on activities.
Put on jewelry after applying perfume, lotion, sunscreen, hair products or cosmetics. Remove it before swimming in chlorinated pools, using household cleaners, or bathing in hot tubs. Chemicals can affect precious metals and some gemstones.
Gold and platinum are durable precious metals, but they can scratch, bend or wear over time. Textured finishes may gradually become smoother on the areas that receive the most contact. This is a natural part of wearing handmade jewelry. I offer a service to refresh the texture where possible.
GEMSTONES AND SETTINGS
Diamonds, sapphires and rubies are suitable for many kinds of jewelry, but no gemstone is indestructible. A hard blow can chip or fracture a stone, and a setting can loosen with wear. Other gemstones may be more sensitive to impact, heat, light, chemicals or changes in temperature.
Take extra care with rings and with designs where the stones or setting are exposed. Avoid wearing gemstone jewelry during activities where it may strike a hard surface or be caught, crushed or pulled.
Check your jewelry regularly for movement, loose stones, bent claws or changes in the setting. I recommend a professional inspection every 6–12 months, especially for rings worn often. If a stone moves or the setting feels different, stop wearing the piece and contact me for an inspection. Do not try to adjust the setting yourself.
If a gemstone chips or cracks, stop wearing the jewelry and contact me. Continued wear may worsen the damage.
CLEANING YOUR JEWELRY
To keep your jewelry clean, soak it in lukewarm water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Gently brush around the stones and settings with a soft-bristled toothbrush, then rinse in clean water and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Diamonds, sapphires and rubies can be cleaned this way. Take care not to clean your jewelry over an open sink, and use a light touch around the settings.
Avoid toothpaste, baking soda, abrasive cleaners, bleach, chlorine and harsh household chemicals.
Ultrasonic cleaning may be suitable for some jewelry, but not for every gemstone, treatment or setting. If you are unsure whether it is appropriate for your piece, contact me before using one.
STORING
Store each piece separately in its jewelry box or a soft pouch to prevent scratches, tangling and contact between gemstones. Diamonds can scratch other jewelry, including other diamonds. Keep jewelry away from heat, direct sunlight and damp areas.
Care and service
I’m happy to offer complimentary professional cleaning and an inspection of your jewelry every 6–12 months. Please get in touch whenever your piece is due for a little care, and I’ll help arrange it.
