Diamond Quality explained: Why Cut Matters More Than Color or Clarity

When people start looking for a diamond, most assume the goal is simple: get the highest grades possible.

The whitest diamond. The clearest diamond. The best diamond.

And honestly, that makes complete sense.

But one of the first things I explain to clients is that the most expensive diamond on paper is not always the diamond that will look the most beautiful in real life.

Cut is usually where the magic happens

If there is one area I rarely recommend compromising on, it's cut.

Cut quality is what determines how light moves through a diamond. It's what creates the sparkle, brightness and flashes of light that people actually notice.

I've seen high-color, high-clarity diamonds look surprisingly flat because they weren't cut particularly well. I've also seen softer colored diamonds completely come alive because the cut was exceptional.

That's why I always say people don't fall in love with a grading report.

They fall in love with the light.

Color and clarity often offer more flexibility

This is where having a little knowledge can go a very long way.

The difference between nearby color grades is often much smaller than people expect, especially once a diamond is set into a ring in a yellow gold ring. The same is true for clarity. Many inclusions are microscopic and completely invisible without magnification.

Sometimes moving slightly down in color or clarity can free up a significant part of the budget while still leaving room for a larger diamond or a stronger cut.

There is no perfect diamond

Some people are drawn to exceptional sparkle.

Others would rather maximise size.

Some love a crisp icy-white diamond, while others don't mind a little warmth if it means getting more presence for their budget.

None of those priorities are wrong.

My role isn't to tell someone what they should choose. It's simply to explain where the differences actually are, so they can decide what matters most to them.

Because at the end of the day, the best diamond isn't the one with the highest grades on paper.

It's the one that feels right to the person who will wear it every day.
